METH is a new documentary film exploring the rising wave of crystal methamphetamine use within the gay population.
Through the stories and reflections of a dozen gay men across the US, who range in age from 21 to 50, we learn of the drug’s allure, its promise, and why its popularity is soaring within the culture.
Use of the drug almost always begins as an ecstatic, mind-blowing thrill ride where one finds himself on top of the world with feelings of superhuman power and collegial connectivity with those around him. The world becomes a place of boundless opportunity and brilliance, and any trace of fear or insecurity is cast off in favor of infinite confidence and libidinous prowess. As crystal’s power takes hold, however, it begins to call the shots, and the fun takes a turn for darkness.
Some of the men in the film are current users, and they share their life with us while under the constant influence of “Tina.” Through their eyes we see how immense and powerful this drug can be, and how it cleverly and insistently saturates one life, in spite of the nagging, conscious knowledge that it is also destroying it.
Other interviewees are former denizens of “Tina World,” who have lost everything because of the drug, but who have managed to shake Tina’s grip and crawl back from the depths she lead them to… Glimmers of hope in a realm where less than 6% ever succeed escaping from.
In December 2002 Todd Ahlberg completed the documentary film, HOOKED, an exploration of the "online cruising" phenomenon within the gay culture which screened with HRFF 2003.
