Sam Wagstaff was one of the most influential figures in modern and contemporary art. Largely responsible for establishing the market for photography, he created an unmatched collection of 19th and 20th century still masterworks, acquired by the Getty in 1984. Wagstaff also famously made the career of his protégé and lover - bad boy photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. Twenty-five years his junior, Mapplethorpe introduced the stunningly handsome, patrician art curator and collector to the uninhibited gay underground of 1970s New York City, and helped launch Wagstaff as an early catalyst for the collision of fine art, fashion and club life until his death from AIDS in 1987. Replete with stunning photographs and tender, insightful interviews (including, most poignantly, rock icon Patti Smith), BLACK WHITE + GRAY is a stylish, penetrating portrait of complex gay man whose aesthetic impact continues to be felt today.
